$10,000 Sewer Line Repair Completed Days Before Sale of Virginia Home

It was mid-afternoon in the middle of April when Fairfax, Virginia homeowner Diane heard a faint beeping sound coming from her basement. As soon as she walked down the stairs, she realized it was a water alarm that was detecting a backup near the main drain.

Diane’s husband was taking a shower at the time, and she noticed the longer the shower stayed on, the more water that pooled up near the drain. Immediately, the couple called HomeServe – they had been customers with a sewer line repair plan for over a decade.

“We’ve had this repair plan for quite some time and have barely had to use it, but never experienced an issue quite like this,” said Diane. “It was a relief to know that it wouldn’t be on us to coordinate a plumber or to compare quotes.”

Diane also had a unique detail in this situation – she was days away from closing on her home and didn’t want to leave the new owners with a problem like this.

Odemz Plumbing Inc. was dispatched, and the first step they took was to snake the sewer line in the hopes of clearing any potential blockage. After hitting a snag or two, they advised Diane and her husband that they felt they dislodged a clog in the line but wanted to return with a camera to get a better look.

Before Odemz returned for their scheduled revisit, water began to back up from the drain again. They returned with a camera and while they couldn’t identify a clear break in the line that would be causing this, they did observe a fair amount of buildup and corrosion. The next step was to bring in special equipment that would run a high-powered stream of water via a hydro jet to see if it loosened any debris.

“Throughout this process, the plumber with Odemz was always professional, on time and kept us informed about next steps,” said Diane. “I felt confident they’d handle the issue for us before the closing on our home – they did a great job.”

Unfortunately, the high-powered jet of water didn’t improve the buildup. Upon further examination, the corrosion rendered a large portion of the pipe unusable. 40 feet of the sewer line along with a new clean out pipe were replaced shortly thereafter. From the start of this repair to the end, Diane and her husband saved $10,000 – just in time for the new owners to move into the home.

“Throughout this process, there wasn’t a time where we didn’t feel listened to and understood whenever we spoke with a HomeServe agent – they really made us feel like they’d do whatever they could to help,” said Diane. “I’ll tell you what I’ve been telling my neighbors – you just never know what’s going to happen with your home or when, so repair plans like this are a must-have.”
